About seven types of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) are available for different categories of taxpayers to file by their fiscal year due date. ITR-1 (Sahaj) is one of the simpler forms and targets a large number of small and medium taxpayers.
Sahaj must be filed by taxpayers who earn up to Rs 5 lakh and derive their income from wages, home ownership/other sources (interest etc.). Specifically, the ITR filing for taxable FT22 for the 2022-23 tax year is due on July 31, 2022.
According to the Income Tax Department’s website, registered users can pre-fill and file ITR-1 services on the electronic tax filing portal. This service allows individual taxpayers to submit ITR-1 online through the Electronic Filing Portal.
To file the ITR-1 form, the taxpayer must have a registered user ID and password. Also, their Permanent Account Number (PAN) status should be active. Other important details include: PAN associated with Aadhaar, pre-verified at least one bank account and specified for refund, and valid mobile number associated with Aadhaar/e-filing portal/bank account/NSDL/CDSL.
Taxpayers must file five parts under ITR-1. These are – Personal Information, Gross Gross Income, Gross Deductions, Taxes Paid and Total Tax Liability.
How to submit an ITR-1 form (Sahaj) online in a few easy steps according to the IT department:
Step 1: Log in to the e-Filing Portal with your User ID and Password.
Step 2: From your dashboard, click Electronic File > Income Tax Return > Submit Income Tax Return.
Step 3: Select 2021-22 as the Year of Assessment and click Next.
Step 4: Select the submission method as Online, and click Continue. If you have completed your income tax return and are waiting to submit it, click Continue to Submit. If you want to discard the saved statement and start over with preparing the statement, click Start New Submission
Step 5: Select the status that applies to you and click Next to continue.
Step 6: You have two options to choose the type of income tax return. First, if you are not sure which ITR form to submit, you can select Help me decide which ITR form to submit and click Continue. Once the system has helped you determine the correct ITR, you can proceed to submit your ITR. Second, if you are sure which ITR you need to file, select “I know which ITR form I need to file”, then select the applicable income tax return from the drop-down list, and click Proceed with ITR.
Step 7: After selecting the ITR that applies to you, make a note of the list of required files and click Start.
Step 8: Check the boxes that apply to you and click Next.
Step 9: Review your pre-filled data and edit if necessary. Enter remaining/additional data (if required). Click Confirm at the end of each section.
Step 10: Enter your income and deduction details in the various sections. After completing and confirming all sections of the form, click Continue.
If a tax liability occurs, you will see a summary of tax calculations based on the information you provide. If there is a tax liability as a result of the calculation, you will see Pay Now and Pay Later options at the bottom of the page.
