Vinesh Phoga won a bronze medal in the 53kg category at the Wrestling World Championships on Wednesday. She made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in the tournament.
The 28-year-old beat Sweden’s Emma Jonah Malmgren 8-0.
Vinesh Phogat previously won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships. She beat two-time medalist Maria Prevolaraki of Greece for bronze. Vinesh went on to become the country’s fifth wrestler to win a medal at the World Championships, joining a roster of fighters including Geeta & Babita Phogat, Alka Tomar and Pooja Dhanda.
In the 2022 event, Vinesh moved into the bronze medal play-off by fighting back after a first-leg loss against 2022 Asian Championship silver medallist Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag on Tuesday.
Three-time Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh made the cut after Batkhuyag reached the final.
In the consolation match, Vines first beat Kazakhstan’s Giuldiz Ehimova 4-0 before recovering from injury to rival Azerbaijan’s Leila Gurbanova in the next match to advance to the bronze medal match .
Vinesh has also shown dominance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She has won all three matches in the Nordic system. She defeated Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don in the final.
